Allouez Brewery Gets Third Approval, One Step Closer to Breaking Ground - WeAreGreenBay.com

Local 5 has been following an Allouez couple with a unique way to raise money for a microbrewery they hope will be open by next year.Monday night's village board meeting determined how the project will move forward.Abby and David Malcolm started professional brewing in 2006, but launched their company Zambaldi brewing in 2016.Now that Allouez's Plan Commission and Village board approved a development plan the couple is even more excited that their brewing business is a possibility thanks to the help of the community."I knew that we get a lot of attention, but we've had a lot more people participating than I expected," says David Malcolm. People have been fantastic. Turns out when you offer people beer for life they get really excited."The Malcoms offered the community free beer for a year for a $500 donation and free beer for life for a $1,500 donation.Now the entrepreneurs are one step closer to making Zambaldi a reality."The next steps will be to be in front of the village board meeting hopefully in the next month and then after that we're hoping to break ground," says Abby Malcom. When completed the brewery will be placed on Webster Avenue next to Huntington. This is the couple's first business and it's been a learning experience."The hardest thing I think is bringing all the threads together," says David. "We've got to talk to architects and builders and bankers and equipment manufacturers for different pieces of equipment that come from manufacturers and trying to pull all the threads together."There's only one more village meeting required. If the site plan is approved, Zambaldi can break ground. And they're continuing their crowd funding efforts until they do."We are running it until we break ground, so that's kind of the deal," says Abby. "You need to believe in us before we break ground and support us and then we pay you back later with ...

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt likely to challenge Streckenbach for Brown County executive - Green Bay Press Gazette

Schmitt, who has been mayor for 16 years, has taken out paperwork to register a campaign to challenge Troy Streckenbach, the Allouez resident who has given strong indications he'll seek a third four-year term as the county's top elected official. He said Thursday afternoon that he's not yet certain if he'll run, but plans to announce a decision soon, likely Tuesday. "I have a lot to offer, and I think there's a lot we can do working with the 24 municipalities," he said. "I'm going to spend a lot of time thinking about this, meet with my spiritual counselor … I really enjoy being a public servant. I love it, and I think I have some great ideas that I would like to explore with other people." A third potential candidate, Mark Berndt of Wrightstown, also has taken out papers to run in the April election for executive. Berndt ran earlier this year to represent southern Brown County as a supervisor; he finished third in a three-way primary. Streckenbach, 46, said he welcomes the challenge no matter the opponent. He said he'll focus his campaign on his administration's accomplishments, not criticism of a challenger. "We've reduced our debt by record levels — $50 million in eight years," he said. "We've reduced taxes while doing something few other counties are: investing significantly in infrastructure … I believe I've done a good job." A Streckenbach-Schmitt race would match two candidates who have proven they ...

Study Shows Benefit of Closing Green Bay Correctional Institution in Allouez - WeAreGreenBay.com

WFRV) - A proposal to replace Green Bay Correctional Institution with new housing and business space in Allouez could create 1,400 jobs and over $1 million a year in property tax revenue. As Kris Schuller reports, those were two findings in an economic-impact study on the proposal released this morning at St. Norbert College. For two years Allouez village leaders have been pushing a plan to close Green Bay Correctional to reuse the property for new development. Tuesday evidence - the proposal has merit.“Today is yet another step on the way to hopefully closing GBCI and coming up with a very exciting property in the village of Allouez,” said Village President Jim Rafter.St. Norbert College released the results of a study it conducted to determine the potential economic impact to Brown County, if the 120-year-old prison was closed and the property redeveloped with hotels, restaurants, shops and office space.“It's a vision, it's not what's going to happen, but it's what could be there,” Rafter said. The study found repurposing the aging prison could create over 1,400 jobs; add between $60 million and $100 million in total property value, along with up to $1.4 million in annual property tax revenue.“There is really no downsize to this project, everybody wins,” said Rep. David Steffen (R-Green Bay).Steffen introduced legislation last year to replace the overcrowded prison with a privately built facility which would open GBCI to development. It failed to gather support.“GBCI is costing Wisconsin roughly a million dollars a month more than a new facility,” said Rep. Steffen. But the lawmaker is determined to move the idea forward - he says the results of this study are hard to ignore. “The policy has been written, the plan has been developed, the people have spoken and now the proof has been released,” Steffen said.A study Steffen and county leaders plan to share with the governor's office ...
